Since this violates Apple's EULA (and as such the VMware Community Terms of Use), any issues you have with trying to run macOS or OS X using VMware Workstation or VMware Workstation Player cannot be discussed at this forum. Unfortunately Apple does not allow you to run a virtual macOS or OS X on non-Apple branded hardware. Not even sure that they can answer as it is more a question for the legal department of apple I think.įWIW, this is my standard answer whenever the topic comes up: is it legal or not? I cannot answer that and I doubt you will get an answer from VMware's legal department on that here. What still counts here though is that "it is not a supported configuration". So far I have chalked it up to it just not being easy to verify and when somebody asks about "macOS from within Workstation" I always inform that user that we cannot answer questions on that topic down here as it violates apple's EULA. I do not consider passing through the smc to your guest as a hack.

Why is it OK if you run a macOS guest on vSphere when the hardware is a mac, but not when you do it via workstation from within bootcamp on that same mac.Įspecially if you don't "hack" your VMware Workstation install in order to get it to work, because if you have to patch parts of your workstation install it clearly is not legal. So far I have always been told "not allowed" (there's earlier debates on this, but it might not be easy to find), but I've asked myself the same question as you. Can anyone shed further light on the legality of using Workstation for MacOS in Bootcamp? It does work, but I'm confused as to why vSphere advertises support for MacOS guests, but Workstation doesn't (even though it works when running on Apple hardware). Basically I would like to legally run MacOS on Workstation in Bootcamp Windows. By that definition, I'm not sure how vSphere is not breaking it, even on Apple hardware? The MacOS High Sierra sla states that virtualizing MacOS is only allowed on Apple hardware that is "running the Apple software". I have also gotten MacOS to boot in a vSphere VM on the same Apple hardware (nested inside of Workstation). I also found that the Apple bootcamp drivers must first be installed in Windows for this to work. vmx file contains "smc.present=true", I can successfully install and run MacOS as a guest VM (this is without any illegal cracks/patches, it just works as is).
